The GOMR.BOEMRE.GOV website is no longer being updated. In its place, BOEM.GOV and BSEE.GOV have been launched. Over the next several weeks, the appropriate content from the GOMR.BOEMRE.GOV website will be moved to the new sites.

FAQs: eWell

Question: What is eWell?

Answer: A secure business-to-government application between the oil and gas operators and BOEMRE used to submit and process applications and documents associated with drilling and production.

Question: What can I find using the eWell public information application?

Answer: The eWell public information web application (eWell APD/AST/ABP Online Query system) allows the public to search publicly released Applications for Permit to Drill (APDs) using a variety of parameters.

Question: Where can I find production data?

Answer: See the Production Data online query tool. You can obtain monthly production by lease. Production data is not released by well.

Question: Where do I find definitions of the different column headings?

Answer: At the bottom of the eWell query page, click the "View the Summary File for the APD/AST/ABP Data" link.

Question: Why can't I find the approved APD that contains the information that I need?

Answer: Check the date for the APD in question. The eWell public information query application came into usage in 2004; scanned APD documents prior to 2004 are stored in another system. If the APD in question is dated between 2004 and April 1998, please refer to the APD Online Query. (Note: APD revision documents are not included in this repository, but they are included in the eWell APD/AST/ABP Online Query system.)

Question: Why can't I find/search pending and returned APDs?

Answer: Permit applications that are pending or have been returned to the operator are considered proprietary information and cannot be released to the public until they become approved. If you are looking for a specific pending or returned permit, continue to check periodically to see if its status has shifted to approved and publicly releasable. The system is updated each business day.

Question: Why is some of the data missing when viewing the APD chart or worksheet?

Answer: Please make sure that all of the appropriate search parameters were selected on the query form before it was submitted. Missing or incorrect parameters can cause information not to be found. Each search field is a hyperlink which will provide an explanation of the proper search values and examples.

The missing information might be considered proprietary information, which cannot be publicly released. In the eWell query system, the basic forms with no attachments are the public versions of the forms; the blanks in the charts contain proprietary information, which has not met the criteria for release. Forms that have attachments have met the criteria for release, and the system has updated the public information.

Question: What information on the APD forms is considered proprietary?

Answer: APDs (including attachments) are proprietary and do not become releasable for two years and 90 days after the required submission date. They would also become releasable 90 days after the well goes on production or after the lease terminates, whichever of the three dates would be the earliest.

The proprietary values on the APD and supplemental APD forms are as follows:

  • Well at Total Depth (Proposed)
  • List of Significant Markers Anticipated - Name
  • List of Significant Markers Anticipated - Top - Measured Depth (MD)
  • List of Attachments (Complete Well Prognosis and Attachments required by 30 CFR 250.414(b) through (g) or 30 CFR 250.1617(c) and (d))
  • Total Depth (TD) (Proposed)
  • H2S Designation
  • H2S Designated Plan Depth Ft. - True Vertical Depth (TVD)
  • Engineering Data - (All items in this section)
  • Remarks
