Selected Western Gulf of Mexico Field Data

Nonproprietary data for over 1,000 Gulf of Mexico fields are available to the public through publications and the Internet.  We have highlighted selected prospect analog fields, fields that have gas production below 15,000' TVDSS, and fields with low-resistivity and low-contrast reservoirs.  Field cumulative production is as of January 1, 2005, as reported to the Minerals Revenue Management.  The Sand Names used in this publication are the internal MMS terminology and might not be consistent with those names used by the operators of a given field.  The Discovered BOE is derived from the MMS publication 1999 Offshore Atlas. Each selected field has one or more representative 1” induction raster log images attached for convenience.

Prospect Analog Fields

This publication includes field information analogous to several of the highlighted prospects.  The selected field data may give insight to the depth, type, and quality of the potential reservoirs.  Additional information from a particular field can be obtained from several GOM publications.

Fields with Production >= 15,000' TVDSS in <= 200 Meters of Water

Field information related to reservoirs that produce gas below 15,000' TVDSS in waters less than 200 meters is presented as an analog for future exploration.  The Deep Gas Initiative allows royalty relief for gas production from reservoirs below 15,000' TVDSS and certain deep exploratory wells.  Royalty relief is intended as an incentive for exploration of the deeper gas potential on the OCS shelf area.  There are 23 reservoirs that have or are currently producing gas below 15,000' TVDSS on the shelf in the Western Gulf of Mexico Planning Area.

Fields with Production from Low-Resistivity/Low-Contrast Reservoirs

The MMS continually strives to promote the exploration and development of the Gulf of Mexico OCS through regulatory initiatives, release of nonproprietary data, and publications. The MMS periodically publishes information pertinent to trends/plays in the GOM OCS that we believe have significant hydrocarbon production potential. One current focus is "low-resistivity" and "low-contrast" reservoirs (Shelton, G. and Hill, W. A., 1993). MMS and the New Orleans Geological Society are initiating a project to generate a publication that identifies all wells in the Gulf of Mexico OCS that are either producing or have produced from "low-resistivity" and "low-contrast" reservoirs (LRLC). We have selected several fields that have productive LRLC reservoirs in the Western Planning Areas and have included them in this webpage.

If you have experience working on LRLC reservoirs and would like to contribute and/or participate in this publication, please contact Greg Condray at (504) 736-2927 or via e-mail at Greg.Condray@boemre.gov.
