MMS Sets Date for Workshop to Discuss
Well Naming and Numbering Requirements

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Minerals Management Service (MMS) Gulf of Mexico OCS Region (GOMR) will hold two workshops to discuss Well Naming and Numbering issues and reporting requirements pertaining to Notice to Lessees and Operators (NTL) No. 2000-N07 Well Naming and Numbering Standards.  The half-day workshops will be held 9:00 a.m. till 11:30 a.m. in Houston on December 4, 2000, and in New Orleans on December 7, 2000.  Although the workshops are free, members of the public planning to attend should register in advance (form is attached).

MMS reissued NTL No. 97-2N as NTL No. 2000-N07 recently, primarily to change the well name/number (WN/N) suffix. NTL No. 97-2N, effective August 1, 1997, required additional reporting for the WN/N whenever more than one borehole existed for a well.  This new data field was called the WN/N Suffix.  The WN/N Suffix was created by duplicating the sidetrack (S/T) code, represented as the 11th and 12th digits of the API Number (per API Bulletin D12A in January 1979), renaming it as wellbore (WB) code, and adding it to the end of the well name/number as WB##, thus tracking the API S/T code.  For example, Well A-4 with API Number of 17-724-40210-00 was renamed Well A-4 WB00.  Because of various sections of the oil and gas industry wanting to differentiate new geologic targets from redrills, NTL 97-2N was reissued as NTL No. 2000-N07 recently, effective May 1, 2001.  The goal of these workshops is to discuss the format of the new WN/N Suffix as described in NTL No. 2000-N07 and the Field Operations Reporter’s Handbook and give examples of how to report the new WN/N Suffix on Forms MMS-124 and 125.

The WN/N workshop is open to participation by the oil and gas industry and their vendors who provide data services.  There is no charge.  The workshops will be held at the Doubletree Guest Suites Houston at 5353 Westheimer Road and at the MMS GOMR Office in New Orleans at 1201 Elmwood Park Boulevard, Room 111/115.  For more information about the workshops, please call Chris Schoennagel at (504) 736-2801 or David Trocquet at (504) 736-2506, or visit the MMS website at the Upcoming Events link.

MMS is the Federal agency that manages the Nation's natural gas, oil, and other mineral resources on the OCS, and collects, accounts for and disburses about $4 billion yearly in revenues from offshore Federal mineral leases and from onshore mineral leases on Federal and Indian lands.
